An Inside Look at the Thermomix

Is Thermomix the world’s most awesome kitchen appliance ever invented?

Firstly, let me just say that I am almost embarrassed to admit that I have never heard of Thermomix until a few days ago when a lovely lady from church told me about her brand new Thermomix and seeing as I write in a food blog, she thought I might be interested in coming along to a demo. Ever since the initial invitation, before I even went to the demo, I started doing my research online and asking people about it. Again, how embarrassing that I had no clue! Shame on me. So called foodie.
From what I have read alone, I’ve gathered the conclusion that the Thermomix is more than just a food processor. It does EVERYTHING! Well, almost everything. Take a look at what it can do: (Reference: www.thermomix.com.au)

    Steams

    • Fish and other seafood
    • Vegetables
    • Meat and chicken
    • Dumplings and buns

All that in one appliance that will even wash itself! (Are you kidding me?!)

Did I mention it’s also a digital weighing scale?

So apparently this current Thermomix model is a result of 20 million Euros investment in the Research and Development of this product. It has won many design awards, and is actually very popular even in commercial kitchens. Professional chefs apparently love using Thermomix for various types of usage in their commercial kitchens. Let me just get one thing out of the way… HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Well, whether you are a commercial user or a home user, you can ONLY purchase Thermomix via a consultant by attending a demo or hosting one or becoming a consultant yourself to earn one. Otherwise, the price is the same across the board for anyone who wishes to purchase the Thermomix…

    AUD $1,939 a pop.

    Ouch.

But wait, wouldn’t you pay that much if it significantly saves you time and even money in the long run? You see, you’ll be able to make a lot of things from scratch, and it’s fast and easy, and you have control over what goes in your food. No preservatives, no artificial flavors. It is a healthier option, and gives you freedom to create delicious anything in your own home. Making food from scratch also proves to be cheaper than store bought food in many cases, and our consultant Kate demonstrated a few examples last night.

She started off by making an Apple, Pear and Ginger Sorbet. She used Raw Sugar and literally pulverised it into Icing Sugar in 10 seconds! Then she added the Apple, Pear and Ginger and Ice and processed it all together and within minutes…

Fresh sorbet! You never have to worry about not having dessert to serve when people randomly come over again… I can just imagine all the yummy “custom” flavors of sorbet and ice cream I would make.

Our demonstrator also showed us how to many home made dip. I can’t remember what herb she used (Kate, if you’re reading this.. a bit of help? Forgot to take notes, hehe) but the Thermomix was cool enough to be able to finely chop ONE GARLIC CLOVE, just a teeny tiny garlic clove and it was chopped finely, add your herbs and cream cheese and voila! Again, my mind is already thinking of all the various flavors I’d like to try in a dip. And store bought dip are not cheap! Edit: The herbs used were garlic, spring onion and parsley.

You can also transform fruit and veggies into a salad in just a few seconds, with dressing!

(Random Photo: I think this was pouring oil / dressing into the salad?)
Here’s one of my favorite feature. I never make bread from scratch because it is messy and I am too lazy to knead. The Thermomix kneads bread for you! It may not cook it, but by the time the Thermomix is done, you don’t have a messy kitchen bench and all you do is stick the dough into the oven!

This was the dough before it rises.

And after letting it rise in the oven at low heat, you start rolling the dough and making your homemade bread rolls! Wheee… so much fun 🙂

The bread rolls are now ready to go in the oven. On the left, is the Mushroom Risotto sitting in a Thermomix warming bowl (food stays warm in it for up to 2 hours) but I will get to the risotto soon.

The end result! Soft, and warm, freshly baked bread… mmmm…

It was so fresh and warm the butter melted immediately. It was soooo goooood…

The 5th course… Chocolate Custard! Again, this looked way too easy and was ready within 10 minutes. From memory, I believe the ingredients included a block of chocolate (completely crushed and pulverised using the Thermomix) and milk and eggs. What did I miss? I wish I took notes… lol.

And finally, the pouring of this wine in this photo above brings us to our final 6th dish and my personal favorite – the Mushroom Risotto. Imagine having the onions and herbs chopped in the Thermomix, and then the Thermomix stir fries it for you, and then you add your Arborio rice and season well and add wine and mushrooms, etc… and you just let it cook itself for 20 minutes.

When it’s done, just stir in some freshly grated parmesan cheese…

Although the Thermomix jug only fits 2 litres, I’d say that is more than enough risotto to feed a family!

So that was pretty much an inside look at a Thermomix demonstration. Six dishes in just over 2 hours, and with talking in between! At the end of it, there wasn’t much of a mess to clean up at all, since we only used the one appliance (and the oven) to do most of the cooking.

The way I see it, Thermomix is perfect for people with food allergies, gluten intolerant, busy mums, busy career people, chefs, foodies who love experimenting with their own flavors, foodies who love making their own spices and curry paste and their own jam, etc, and lazy people who enjoy the convenience and speed, who hates cleaning, who will otherwise not bother cooking. Doesn’t that pretty much cover everyone?!

They also send you a Starter Recipe Book with every purchase, and they have more specific recipe books available if you want to focus more on Vegetarian, or Asian, or Soups, or Dips, or anything any other niche. But then again, you don’t have to worry there are heaps of recipes available online everywhere!

So the only thing stopping me from buying the Thermomix immediately is what am I going to do with all the other kitchen appliances I will no longer use?

Thank you to the family who invited me to the demo (you know who you are), hubby and I had a great night. Thank you Kate for showing us the ropes. Now who wants to come to a Thermomix demo to see it all for yourself, if I do decide to host one?? Hehe. At least you know there will be FOOD!

Oh, I almost forgot to show you a picture with the steamer basket. Fits a whole fish, a stack loads of veggies and you can cook your rice at the same time in the standard jug! Talk about multi purpose 🙂

    1. This is an excellent review of Thermomix and your enthusiasm is infectious! Like you, I was stunned when I first 'met' the Thermomix. Couldn't believe that I'd never heard of it before because… How could such a super kitchen machine possibly exist without my knowing it? Well it's true kids — the Thermomix is all that and more. Once you are get it into the privacy of your own kitchen… the fun REALLY starts as we discover even more ways to make it work for us.Thanks for this, I am adding your post to the list of Thermomix reviews on my blog.(ps – to those who wonder at the price, I have to say that I use Thermomix much more frequently than I use my stove, and that I enjoy using it a whole lot more too. No, I'm not affiliated with the company, but I sure do like to talk about Thermomix!)

    2. That machine is ridiculously amazing! Now I want not one but two for my kitchens in Jakarta and Sydney! But so so terribly expensive. Hiks

    3. Great post!! I'm linking to this from my blog too, so everyone can see what a Thermomix demo is like :)I've had a Thermomix for nearly 7 years, and use it every day, sometimes up to 12 times a day – because it replaces soooo many appliances and does so much!! Today I've used it to grind almonds, make vanilla sugar (grinding up a whole vanilla bean with the sugar), cream butter & sugar, make two cakes (a sponge & a plum cake), make lemon-lime butter, make berry coulis, make passionfruit cashew cream, and now I'm off to grind chocolate & walnuts for a flourless choc espresso cake, then I'll use it to chop our veges & make the pasta sauce for dinner (cooking the pasta in the sauce – all-in-one)! Oh, and I'm going to grind grain and make bread. It's definitely worth the money to me!! (Btw, there are payment options, you don't have to pay the whole lot at once.)Thanks again for a great post! 🙂

    4. Love the post Kim. The Thermomix is pretty cool. The chefs at Steer were using it to make a lot of purees and sauces. I love you can just throw things in and forget about it. It is quite expensive but I wonder if it pays for itself when you use it often. Are you going to buy one now?

    5. I think it's good for a small family. Anyway, with the strong AUD$, you can get Thermomix in Malaysia at around RM5K.

    6. Many of the comments mention the cost issue. May I offer my opinion on the cost – If you think about it. There area few options to paying off your new Thermomix. The first is the cheapest but most daunting – Cash or credit card. Yes it is crazy to think of having to pay off yet another dept on the credit card – eek…. BUT what if it is over 3 months (the next cheapest option), The credit card will not take such a battering and it is only and small admin fee. BUT wait, there is more…. Have you got a mobile phone plan? How much does it cost a month over a 24month period? And what does it do for you over that time? Think about the reality of what the Thermomix can do for you and your family (or even as a single person as I am) and the how much it will save you in time and money (long term)and good nutrition. Over a 12 month period, the Thermomix costs approximately $43 per week. ($172 per month). If you break it down over a finance plan of 4 years, it is approx $2 per day or $15 per week. A bargain in my opinion! I never put my Thermomix away in a cupboard and cook or make something in it EVERY DAY. Fresh bread, lunches for work, fresh juices, porridge for breakfast on a cold winter morning. You can even sell your old appliances on E-bay and get back some of the money. Think again about the cost, it is really worth it. AND, if you hold demo's you get free stuff too.Have fun and if you want one, get one, you will love it.

    8. One thing i wonder whati is the reason preventing the manufacturing company to put the price on their website. This does not make the customer think that he is a victim of any possible cheating? In cyprus the item is Euro 1300 and in uk Euro940.This makes me feel angry. thanks!

    10. I can't live without my Thermy! I have only had her for 8 weeks now and am already trying to work out how to pay for a second one. I'm definitely getting at least a second bowl and blade set for convenience on my busy cooking weekends. I now make our own butter, jams, nut butter (peanut, cashew, hazelnut etc), pizza dough, pasta sauces, sorbets, ice-cream, juices. I have always preferred to make home made biscuits, cakes & slices for my family but often didn't have the time to do so. Now with Thermy, I can whip up a cake mix or cookie dough in less than 5 mins. The 40 sec biscuits are a firm favourite. Yes, the price is initially daunting but honestly, what price do you place on time saving and healthy eating? In our house, she pays for herself as our grocery bill is drastically reduced.Oh, and Thermy's uses aren't just restricted to food stuffs. There is a wealth of information on the internet including showing you how to make your own washing powder.

It cooks with out a mess and does not waste food – so you save money and re coup on your investment. Also you can tax deduct teh full amount if you have a business as it is also a coffee machine. These are biiger in teh west than in the eastern states – BEST BUY EVER

    12. A great post! We've had out Thermomix for just under a year now and it's worth every cent. Seriously. And, as a few others have mentioned, there are some really good payment options so you don't need to pay the whole amount all at once.Just last weekend I made anzacs, brownies, cardamon biscuits, hazelnut cake, fried rice and steamed salmon with veggies. So easy! Delish 🙂

    13. I have to agree with Celebrations By Cate about the price. There are many finance options and ways to spread the payments that make acquiring a Thermomix easier on the wallet. And as ThermomixBlogger Helene said, you'll use your Thermomix every day to create delicious, healthy and time-saving meals for your family. You can't put a price on that!In terms of price differences between countries, that's due to currency exchange rates and there's not a lot we can do about it.But as for what to do with all those appliances cluttering up your kitchen that you probably don't even use any more, Thermomix doesn't cost any more than you have already spent on them. It's one appliance that does the work of about 12, in less time, and then it cleans itself! Do what I did and sell your useless appliances on eBay, and apply the money to the cost of your Thermomix. Easy!

    14. I procrastinated about buying one for about 6 months purely because of the price – finally I took the plunge and bought one. I can't believe I waited so long! The longer I have it, the more I use it, the more I love it! I am now a consultant and just love showing it off!

    15. Truly amazing, I was bit sceptical at first when hearing about it. My girlfriend said she wanted one so we organised a home demo, by the time the risotto come out I was sold and have never looked back. I wasn`t the best of cooks, but this machine just makes it so easy and straight forward always and the meals are consistently delicious. Healthy meals are so easy to make and quick, gets used in our house at least once a day, best investment I have ever made. Can`t believe i ever lived without it.

    16. No doubt Thermomix TM 31 is a good machine, but luckily there are some other good machines out in the market that compete with the price! I use HotMix Pro Gastro, which is more expensive but a better machine all around and for the serious foodie cooks out there. Would love for you to take a look at my blog and see what you think:)

    17. I'm with Quirky Cooking Jo, Thermomixblogger Helene and Celebrations Cate and all of their comments. Awesome machine. I've had mine for two years and am experimenting even more by the day, and like Quirky, use it several times a day for different processes. We don't do take-aways – takes you longer to look at a menu, order it and have it delivered than it does to cook up your own healthier take-in, for cheaper. Go Thermie!

    18. I thought the price was a bit rich until I went to a demo and saw what it was capable of! I was sold, not even the price was stopping me. I've had my thermie for over 2 years now, plus a second one and I love, love, love, it. Home made everything in less time than traditional cooking times. Everything tastes so much nicer, no take aways anymore and the whole family enjoys the health benefits. You can't put a price on good health. Buying a Thermomix was the best investment.

    19. I've had my Thermomix for a year now and I can say that I use it EVERY day! You will never need another kitchen appliance again! Just think if you added the cost of the 20+ appliances that you have sitting in your kitchen, that the Thermomix replaces, the cost of those appliances will probably come to the same amount, if not more than a Thermomix. And can you say that you use all those 20+ appliances EVERY day! It seems more crazy to me to pay for all the other appliances and have them just sit there than to purchase a Thermomix! It makes the best food! I can say now that Risotto is now 'one of my can be bothered cooking' meals because it makes it so easy. You wouldn't say that if you had to stand at the stove and stir in the stock to make your risotto! Makes awesome, tasty food! I could just go on and on about it. I can't rate it highly enough! What an awesome appliance!
