Sarawak Laksa Recipe

(This picture above is an authentic bowl of Sarawak Laksa from a coffee shop in Kuching, scroll all the way down the post to see my home cooked version…) Living in Melbourne and growing up in Kuching usually equals to some serious occasional food cravings. I’ve lived in Melbourne for 5 years now, and everytime I have a chance to go home and visit my family still living in Sarawak (Malaysia) – it usually means lots of eating activities. To prove my point, during my last trip I blogged a massive 7 BLOG ENTRIES on Kuching Food Adventures alone. That’s … Continue reading Sarawak Laksa Recipe

Chinese Styled Braised Pork Leg with Japanese Tofu

No Carb Diet Recipe Series I suppose by now you’ve noticed that a great non-carb substitute for rice / noodles in any dish is.. TOFU! Smooth tofu in particular is my favorite 🙂 The result of this dish is a super tender, melt in your mouth, fall off the bone pork in a really “sweet” sauce combined with silky smooth tofu. When you eat this dish, combine a bit of pork meat with tofu and the crunchy texture of the freshly chopped spring onions and fried onions with the strong flavors of fresh coriander leaves… HEAVEN! Ingredients: 1 packet Japanese … Continue reading Chinese Styled Braised Pork Leg with Japanese Tofu

No Carb Diet Recipe Series: Chinese Egg Omelette with "Lap Chiong", Capsicum, Onion and Coriander

Hello everyone! As you may know, this is my 2nd week of doing this whole “No Carb Diet” thing. Surprisingly, it’s not that hard! Well, I’ve never been a big bread eater anyway… so basically I just had to significantly cut down on potatoes, rice, pasta and noodles. I’m allowed once a week, need to have a little bit of carb to provide the energy needed for exercise – which I do 3-4 times a week. So far, I have lost 1kg. It’s not that bad.. considering I’m probably also gaining muscle weight from the exercise. It’s going really good … Continue reading No Carb Diet Recipe Series: Chinese Egg Omelette with "Lap Chiong", Capsicum, Onion and Coriander

"Ayam Masak Merah" aka Malaysian Red Cooked Chicken Recipe

I was inspired to cook this dish mostly due to the recent “Eid” or “Raya Aidilfitri” festivities celebrated by the Muslims. I can so clearly remember growing up in Malaysia, whenever Raya comes around I look forward to visiting our Muslim friends at their Open House to eat the rendang, curries, and especially the lemang (traditional food originated from the Iban people in Borneo – PS my mom is Iban, therefore I am half Iban! – made of glutinous rice and coconut milk and cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick lined with banana leaves in order to prevent the rice … Continue reading "Ayam Masak Merah" aka Malaysian Red Cooked Chicken Recipe

It’s All About The Broth…

Recently, “The Ramen Girl” featuring the late Brittany Murphy has become one of my favorite “food” movies of all time. It’s just a lovely, fun movie about love, life and Japanese ramen. For those who are not familiar, “ramen” is a Japanese noodle dish. It is served in a meat or fish-based broth, often flavored with soy sauce or miso, and uses toppings such as sliced pork, dried seaweed, kamaboko, green onions, and occasionally corn. Almost every locality in Japan has its own variation of ramen, from the tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen of KyÅ«shÅ« to the miso ramen of … Continue reading It’s All About The Broth…

Simple Laksa Recipe + Father’s Day Weekend

Just had a pretty big weekend. I had a party at my place on Friday night, it was a big night. I didn’t have to do anything or go anywhere on Saturday, so I cooked a simple laksa for myself which turned out absolutely delicious! I guess I’ll blog about it considering I haven’t really been blogging much. This is indeed a really simple laksa recipe anyone can make at home. It’s not as authentic as a Penang Laksa or a Sarawak Laksa, but this is good laksa and still a nice, comforting dish for a cold night.. and Melbourne … Continue reading Simple Laksa Recipe + Father’s Day Weekend

Beef Wonton Soup / Fried Wontons

I haven’t been able to do a “proper” grocery shop for almost two weeks now, and as a consequence my pantry looked a little bit empty and choices for our meals were limited. However, never underestimate how far 1kg of beef mince can go! This weekend, I cooked up a pot of Beef Wonton Soup (serves 4), two serves of Fried Wontons for entree, another two serves of wontons frozen for next time, and 4 serves of Gary Mehigan’s Spicy Pasta and Meatballs (recipe here)!! Wontons are great because they are reasonably easy to make, and you can make lots … Continue reading Beef Wonton Soup / Fried Wontons
